Anna is taking a break from her busy life and decides to travel the world to work on herself. She travels to India and begins working with a spiritual guru to learn how to live in the moment. While in India she meets an American named Ryan. They embark on a journey together and both change their lives forever through this experience. Anna is the second Tamil film of Shilpa Shetty after "Thamizh" in 2003. The film was initially titled "Ana", but the spelling of the title was changed to Anna by director Priyadarshan. Priyadarshan, who earlier directed Shetty in "" (1994) and "Hameshaa" (1995), said: "I was contemplating on a theme for my next project and I wanted it to be something very different from the other films I had done." Through his wife, Poornima Jayaram, he met Ravi Kumar who narrated him a story about an American lady’s real-life journey through India and Japan. Ravi Kumar and Priyadarshan developed the concept and wrote the script for "Anna", and Shetty was signed on as the lead actress. The director said: I wanted to make a film with Shilpa but I needed a script which would suit her personality. I also wanted something like my earlier films like "Kaththi" (2014) and "Hulchul" (2004), where I had explored women-centric themes... And we came up with this story line of a woman who went to India... A spiritual journey for her, besides travelling to different places in India, is what forms the crux of this film. Shetty, who signed up for three films, said that she wanted to work with Priyadarshan again. She said: "I had heard about his film "Anna" since it was announced some time ago. It sounded interesting. I am also grateful to him for the opportunity he gave me in my first film." Priyadarshan said that Shetty had a difficult task as she had to play dual roles of an American woman and an Indian woman. He commented on her performances: "She played both roles very well... It was very tough on her because the two characters are the same but were created differently by the director... We had a tough time shooting the first schedule but she was a trooper." Apart from Shetty, other cast members include Sathyaraj, Vadivelu and Goundamani who play supporting roles. Shetty also brought her husband Raj Kundra on board as a producer of the film. For the role of Ryan, Priyadarshan wanted to cast an American actor who could speak Tamil fluently. He was introduced to Vibha Chibber through director Selvaraghavan. Chibber agreed to do the film after learning that it would be produced by Selvaraghavan and Priyadarshan who earlier worked with her in "Kadhal Virus" (2007). 20cfa1e7782078
